Rutland House needs to be seen to really appreciate its beauty and elegance so viewings are completely encouraged and you will be made most welcome.
The house began its long and colourful history in the early 1800’s and in 1832 it was used as a boys’ academy. It became known as Edenfield Academy but was later demolished in 1893 and a new house was built on the site but set back to face Town Field. The house was rebuilt by W.S Arnold a local building contractor. Arnold took residence in 1893 with his wife and his young son Edwin. They had 3 domestic staff to help manage the beautiful and stunning home Arnold had created.
In 1914 the family moved to Harrogate and Edenfield was handed over to Doncaster Voluntary & Detachment for use as an auxiliary hospital for convalescent soldiers. Along with the house came a handsome gift of cash, and the house became known as the Arnold Auxiliary Hospital. Following this the house became a maternity hospital where the famous actress Diana Rigg was born on 20th July 1938.
In recent decades Rutland House saw several more changes; including becoming a residential home and then finally it went on to become Hill House School until relatively recently when the school was closed and Rutland House was left empty. The recent owners saw real potential in this beautiful house and have meticulously restored the building to its former glory. Rutland House has now opened its doors for business people to enjoy holding any type of event or seminar in any one of its many stunningly restored rooms. The unique style of the house also lends itself to becoming a more alternative type of wedding venue where the bride and groom can use the space as a blank canvas to create the wedding reception of their dreams.
We look forward to welcoming you to Rutland House - whatever the reason for your visit we know you will enjoy the house as much as we have enjoyed creating such a unique and beautiful venue.
